On Wednesday 26th Sept, I waited nervously for updates on Whatsapp from those members of Club Ciclos Teto – Peña Rocio Gamonal (based here in Pola de Siero, Asturias) who were in Andorra watching Rocio Gamonal take part in the Women’s Masters MTB World Championship.
Rocio got off to a flyer and soon pulled away but I didn’t build my hopes up too high as anything can happen in cycling; such as when her bike broke in the Ciclocross world championships earlier in the year, when she was doing so well.
It was a nerve racking 1 hour and 18 minutes but finally the wait was over and Rocio – wearing the team colours of Ciclos Teto – crossed the line, becoming World champion for a second time.
I was so delighted for Rocio and for Ciclos Teto. Rocio has to fit her training in around her daily work schedule and to be honest I don’t know how she does it. However, Ciclos Teto and the members of the Club/Peña give Rocio all the mechanical and moral support she could possibly ask for. The fact she has to work full time makes her victory even more special as, despite her lack of quality training time, she still managed to put in an awesome performance, beating her closest rival by over 6 minutes.
Well done Rocio! You’re a true champion and I’m so happy for you.
Rocio is also a World champion in the Team Relay and earlier this year became Spanish Ciclocross Champion (which she has won on numerous occasions)
