Today I took my daughter to watch the women’s elite Campeonato de España de Ciclocross 2015 (Spanish Cyclocross Championship) in Gijon. We were there to support Rocio Gamonal, who recently came a fantastic 8th in the European Women’s Elite Cyclocross Championships in Lorsch, Germany.
We met up with some other fans of Rocio and other member of the cycling club Ciclos Teto – Peña Rocio Gamonal and waited nervously for the race to start.
Rocio also seemed nervous at the start and got left behind a little but flew by everyone by about turn two, and by the time she came past us she had already opened a 10 second lead. She was really flying and the gap grew considerably lap by lap. It turned out to be an exhibition ride as she won by over a minute and once again donned the Spanish Champions jersey. Despite her dominance you could see how relieved she was and seemed really happy with the victory. My daughter was also very happy and loved running around the track cheering Rocio on, and it was great being there to see her win.
We managed to catch up with her after the race and congratulate her but had to leave before the medal ceremony. All in all it was a fantastic event and a great result. I’m also hoping that my daughter may have been inspired by Rocio and the other riders and want to start riding more. 🙂
Well Done Rocio! You’re a true champion!
